The windows explorer displays the hierarchical structures of drives, files and folders on the computer. The windows explorer window is separated into two parts, the left and the right-hand sides. The left-hand side pane shows the system folders (i.e. desktop) and sub-folders, whilst to the right-hand window, we can see/view the contents of the selected folders.

The Microsoft windows XP explorer window

To view the contents of the folder, just left click on the specific folder and look at the right-hand side pane, where the folder’s contents (folders and or files) are typically displayed.

If you want to expand a branch one level, double click on the required folder or simply click ones the plus sign located at the left side of the folder’s name. To collapse the folder or drive, simply click on the minus sign seen on the left-hand side of the folder name.

You can perform as many tasks as you prefer within the explorer window i.e. copying or cutting files and folders from one drive to another or from one folder to another. For instance you can move or copy a file or folder from the My Documents folder to the Desktop or to the Drive C/D, etc.

Note that you are allowed to cut, copy, open and delete files and folders to the right-hand window in the explorer window and not to the left pane.

Other parts seen in the explorer window include title bar, menu bar, tool bar, address bar, scroll bar(s) and status bar.

The title bar resides at the top of the window displaying the name of the active/open folder, file, etc. To the right-hand side of the title bar are the windows control buttons which are specifically designed for adjusting the window’s width and height or closing it. These include Minimize, Maximize, Restore Down and Close buttons.

This is the Title bar

The line below the Title bar is known as the Menu bar containing drop down menus that a user can select to execute a specific operation. On this bar we can see File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools and Help menus. To see the commands associated with any Menu item, just click on the respective menu item to bring the drop down menu.

Below the Menu bar there is a toolbar containing on-screen buttons commonly known as standard buttons which you can select to perform a certain operation such as changing the views in the contents’ window, moving forwards and backwards, etc. These buttons include bark, forward, search, folders, views, etc.

The back and forward buttons as their names imply, help us to navigate forward and back within the explorer window when we are working with our files and folders located inside the hard disk drives or removable storage devices, i.e. Floppy disks, DVD discs, etc.

The search button displays the search pane to the left of windows explorer window that gives options for searching anything located inside the computer. This feature can also help you search and find computers.

Below the toolbar, we can see the address bar that shows the locations of currently open folder in the hard drives. If you know the location of the file/folder in the hard drive, you can open it by typing its general address in the address box and hit the enter key or click the Go button located to the right-hand side of the address bar.

Note that, if you type an incorrect name, you will get an error message, hence you must type it correctly and if you don’t know how to open folders and files in this way, use the normal methods to avoid errors!

Mbunge wa Nzega, Dr. Hamis kigwangalla asema hatowasusia fisi bucha!

Mbunge wa Nzega, Dr. Hamis kigwangalla asema hatowasusia fisi bucha

You are Here: Home > News > Mbunge wa Nzega, Dr. Hamis kigwangalla asema hatowasusia fisi bucha

Dr. Hamis Kigwangalla

kigwangalla ameweka wazi mambo manne:

How to install windows XP

How to install windows XP

You are here: Home > tutorials > Computer basics > How to install windows XP

Installing an Operating system is not as easy as application software, so you have to get yourself familiar with the installation procedures so that you can install it properly and safely without causing any unexpected outcome.

PLEASE NOTE that installing an Operating system in your computer will erase all data, including your personal files, programs and any settings associated to your system, and there is NO way to recover the files or reverse the steps. Make sure you back up your files and system settings so that you can easily restore or reverse back when system failure occurs.

Below are theprocedures & steps for the windows XP installation:

  1. Insert/locate the CD containing a copy of Windows XP into your PC’s CD drive and reboot your computer.
  2. As computer boots you will see the message prompting you to “Press Any key to boot from CD”. Just click any key on your keyboard. If you do not get this prompt and your computer is unable to boot from CD run the booting from the CD troubleshooting steps.
  3. After the Windows XP setup menu appears on the screen, press ENTER key to continue
  4. When the Windows XP licensing agreement opens and you agree to the statements, press F8 key.
  5. Next, Windows will give you the option to repair Windows XP or to install a fresh copy if Windows XP is already installed on the computer. In this case we want to install a new copy of Windows XP; hence you have to hit ESC key.
  6. Next step will be the partition setup. This step gives option to specify whether you want to delete a partition, create a new one or just select an existing partition. It’s important to note that if a partition already exists and you do not want to have multiple operating systems on your computer, you delete an existing partition before proceeding with the setup. Keep in your mind that when you delete a partition all of your data/information will be removed permanently from your computer system.

    How to delete a partition
Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to select the partition you want to delete. Press D and ENTER then press L to delete the partition and then press ENTER.

    How to create the partition
Select an unpartitioned space you wish to create a partition on and press C. Specify the size of the partition in MB, then press ENTER.

  7. Press ENTER to proceed installing an Operating System (Windows XP).
  8. Select Format the partition using the NTFS file system and press ENTER. The computer will start formatting the drive. Depending on how big the partition is will determine the length of time the format will take. Be patient during this step as it can take some time to finish. Formatting erases all files and other data in the hard disk drive, then the files of the new copy of windows XP will be copied into the drive.
  9. After the format, Windows will begin installing the files into the drive and your computer will restart several times. Don’t panic. This is a normal condition in the installation process. After this step you will be able to use your mouse to perform different tasks.
  10. Click next after specifying your preferences in the ‘Regional and language options’ page.
  11. Type your name and Organization name on the ‘Personalize Your Software’ page and click next.
  12. Type your software’s ‘Product Keys’ typically located on your Windows XP CD case and click next to continue.
  13. Type the computer’s name and Administrator’s password and re-enter the password into the Confirm Password box. Click Next.
  14. Set your computer’s clock. Then click the Time Zone down arrow, and select your time zone. Click Next.
  15. Click Next or OK to all of the next steps until you will see the Windows XP’s Welcome Screen.

NOTE:
Keep in your mind that all the procedures explained above can sometimes not work properly due to the various factors. If this occurs contact your hardware manufacturer for more support.

How to install programs in windows

Programs are what make our computers useful. Without software programs, computers are nothing at all. Why? Simply because a program instructs the computer what to do. There are so many programs in the software market, and each of them is designed for a specific functionality/task (the way to process data). These program need to be installed in our computers in order to use them. Below are instructions, tips and procedures you can use when installing a software program into your PC which is running windows operating system.

Software program installation processes depend on the operation system running on your PC and the program you want to install. Many utilities, games and programs have an ‘autoplay’ feature that automatically starts the setup or installation screen right after you insert the CD/DVD disc into the CD/DVD drive.

What you suppose to do is just following the instructions provided by the wizard, and the installation process will be complete after a certain time depending on different factors, including your PC’s speed and the number of files (data) the program contain.

Wait a moment while the program is being installed. After the wizard completes installation, it will display a message to notify you the installation is complete. Click the finish button typically located to the bottom-right of the installation screen or a similar button according to the version of windows you have or an installer.

Good news is that an installation wizard offers a step-by-step guide, asking you questions that you will answer by either clicking on the radio buttons, check boxes or typing a few characters into the text boxes provided. There are also common options such as Back, Next, Cancel, Ok and Finish which will help you navigate forwards, backwards or confirm a certain action.

If your disc does not start automatically after inserting a disc, you will then need to start it manually by:.

  • Click on the start button
  • Select My Computer
  • Navigate to the disc and open it
  • Double click the ‘Setup’ file (normally labeled as ‘Setup’). An installation process will begin and I recommend you to pay much attention during the process as carelessness will lead your PC being in severe problems.

In almost all programs there are Licensing Agreements from the programs owners to warn and restrict you from using their product in illegal way or similar actions. You’ll see these Licensing Agreements during an installation process. Make sure you read them carefully before proceeding so that you won’t get ‘taken to jail’. Check the check box to accept the terms of conditions, and proceed.

How to install a program from the Internet (download & install).

Sometimes you may need to download and install programs, games and utilities. Here you will need to go to the website offering downloadable software, and then find a link labeled as ‘Download’ or something similar. You will be prompted to either save or install/run the download after clicking the download link. In this case you will need to select run/install by clicking on the respective displaying button/text. Read the Licensing Agreements and privacy policy and check the check box to accept.

To continue, click on either ‘Continue’ or ‘Next’ options. Follow all instructions provided to complete the downloading and installation process.
