Websites differ in terms of contents and other features. Below is the list of the most popular types of websites on the web, which I have categorized depending on how they are featured with.

eCommerce Websites

eCommerce or e-Commerce as it’s sometimes written is an acronym for Electronic Commerce. Therefore an e-Commerce website is the kind of website that engages in selling and buying products and services online. These websites provide options for customers to pay bills online for certain services or products.

Informational Websites

As the heading above implies, informational websites are the types of websites that provide different types of information whether for free or paid. Normally, the information is well categorized so that the visitors can access easily and quickly. In most cases, informational sites contain political, academic, economic and breaking news such as sports and other events. They also contain reference materials, TV guides and weather information.

Search Engine websites

These are websites featured with the capabilities of searching the web content (i.e. computer games, online TV, music, movies, etc.). The search engines are online tools embedded on the web pages that provide options for visitors to search for files located on the web. Most of these kinds of websites such as Google, Bing Search, DuckDuckGo and Yippy keep their web pages simplest in order for visitors to find the search tools (search boxes, buttons, etc) easily.

Blogs

A blog is like an online diary containing the regular updates. These sorts of sites can be created and managed by anyone as long as they do not require more programming skills like the actual sites. There are a variety of blogging services and most of them are free of charge such as blogger.com (Google), wordpress.com, Windows Live spaces (Microsoft), etc. Blogs like other sites, vary in case of content as some are created for supplying news, entertainment, academic articles, etc.

Forums

A Forum is another type of websites that is built specifically for the people to collaboratively discuss on a variety number of topics. Forums require users to register so that they will have an authority to post topics, answer questions and access other features associated to the specific forum. The majority of forums are created for posting specific types of topics such as political, economic, religious, academic and technological matters.

Social Networking Websites

Social networking sites are the platforms where users can do a variety range of tasks such as finding friends, online chatting, listening to music, watching videos and sharing opinions and events. In order for a person to access the service provided by these sites, he/she must create an account or simply subscribe depending on the site's functionalities.

The popular social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn provide an option for users to create profiles so that they can be identified by other users on the web. Another service offered by social networks is microblogging. In Facebook a user can not only find friends, send message, comment and upload photos and videos, but also he or she can create and manage Facebook pages and groups.
