What is a Social Networking site?

A social networking site is a kind of a website where a person can register/join, set up an online profile and share his personal information, chat and interact with other users Worldwide. In most cases, Social Networking Sites or social media sites as they are sometimes referred to as are intentionally designed for a public to keep in touch, find friends and share their common interests on the Internet/online. These sites have become an effective way of connecting people in the virtual world.

Most of these social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are free to join, which means you do not require paying any amount of money. What you suppose to do is just registering or joining and start airing your views and opinions.

In order to get approved as a user, you have to provide your personal details/information required depending on the social network you are registering to. They also provide options for members to decide which kind of privacy setting they prefer, public or private. The public profiles are viewable to anyone on the web while the private ones are can be accessed by either the user him/herself or specified members/friends.

Particularly, social networking sites bring people together and most of the users who are most active on these platforms are teenagers in their 20s. Most of these sites have the minimum age limit of 13 year for users to join. The children under this age are not legally allowed, but because there is no way out to verify every user’s exact age, even young ones are joining and hook up new friends without restriction.

Social networking sites have simplified the communication expenses, as a registered user with Internet access can communicate with another user wherever in the World instantly and freely. A user can transfer information in a variety of formats such as videos, music, photos and text.

Social networks such as Facebook allow users to publish microblogging-like posts, whereby other friends are allowed to comment on or express their reactions on the specific post.

There are so many social network sites on the Internet today, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+, StumbleUpon, Myspace, Youtube, Windows Live Space, Classmates, Friendster, Orkut, bebo and TagWorld.
