You are here: Home / Tutorials / Blogging / What is a blog and how does it work?

A blog is a personal website that an individual person can create for recording and expressing his/her opinions, experiences, and interests. The blogs contain short, informal articles typically known as blog posts and are regularly updated with new content. A blog can contain different kinds of information such as images (pictures), text, videos, animations, etc.

The majority of blogs are owned and developed/updated by individuals while some are owned by big companies for different purposes. For instance, this blog (mjknetten.blogspot.com), is mine. I created it for posting computer tutorials and other related issues as well as up-to-date news! You can also have yours if you prefer as long as you have something to air to your favorite public. Of course you can. Keep on reading my free tutorials I am offering so that you can be skillful enough to manage writing a professionally-looking blog-site!

An example of a blog!

Very Important for you!

As other platforms, the bloggingsphere has different terminologies that you have to understand each one so that you don’t confuse them. Below are some of these terminologies. Read them carefully so that you will be able to differentiate one term from others:

Blog and Weblog

The term Blog is a short form for Weblog. A Weblog or Web log is a sort of a Web site that consists of a series of entries arranged in reverse chronological order, updated with new content on the regular basis.

Blogger

A blogger is a person who writes and manages/updates blog’s content as well as performing other blogging-related tasks. A blogger can be anyone, regardless of age, sex or backgrounds! Also a blogger is responsible for replying comments submitted by his/her blog’s visitors or users.

Blogging

Blogging involves performing any blog-related task, such as starting a new blog, writing/posting new entries, promoting your blog, replying comments, etc.

Generally, in combining the above terminologies we can say: “…..Mpiga Kabeya is a blogger. He blogs on mjknetten blog (weblog)!” That’s all about.

In fact as I said above, anyone having a computer with internet connection can start a blog and even become a successful blogger in the blogsphere. There are many reasons on “why people blog?”. Some say they blog for fun (as a hobby), sharing expertise and experience on a specific topic/issue, keeping the public updated on different issues, while others increase their general incomes through their blogs’ content. On top of that, there are some people considering blogging as a way for them to learn web designing practically, as they can find their pages hosted on the web and displayed on browsers freely or by paying a little amount of money.

All in all, no matter what your main objective of blogging, there is no limit on the topics you want your blog to work on. That’s why you can find blogs differ in terms of topics they present about. Some bloggers post news on political, economic, religious, educational or tourist/traveling matters as well as personal/individual information. The fact profile that, you have unlimited freedom and space to express and discuss on the topics your knowledgeable about.

Even though, blogging requires computer basics knowledge as well as internet skills. This is because everything involving blogging activities is closely related to the computer systems and internet features as well as functionalities. If you lack these qualifications, I recommend you should browse our free computer basics tutorials, or Internet basics tutorials! And if you are sure that you have some basic knowledge on computers and internet, we can head on then.

The websites that allow users to create blogs are referred to as blogging platforms or blogging services. There are many blogging sites out there. Some of them such as Blogger and Wordpress are popular. Some of these platforms are easy to use in the way that even the average internet users can afford using them, while others require users to have high knowledges and skills on web designing especially coding. Coding involves designing web pages by using web designing languages such as HTML, CSS, JQuery, JavaScript, PHP, etc.

The following are the blogging platforms that are used often by bloggers: Blogger.com, WordPress.com, Livejournal.com, Blog.com, Tumblr.com, Weebly.com and Blogster. The list goes on, but I have just mentioned the most used ones.
