You are here: Home > tutorials > Computer basics > What is mouse clicking? Clicking or just Click is a term used to describe an action of pressing and releasing the mouse button, be it the right, left or the middle/scroll button. Clicking can be performed once or many times depending on the user's intention and the results vary depending on the item/object clicked and a software program on which a user is working. For example, when you click the right button (Right Click) on the blank area on the screen or desktop, the pop up menu will appear displaying common commands you can select. To select any of these commands, you will have to point on it and click the left button (Left Click). Clicking the left (primary) button of the mouse is referred to as Right Click or Single Click, while clicking the right one is known as Right Click. An action of clicking the left button two times is typically referred to as Double click. Middle Click involves clicking the middle button of the mouse if it's the three-buttons mouse. There is also a clicking action known as Click and Drag or Transferring that is achieved by pressing and holding the mouse button (left button) and moving the mouse while you continue to hold the mouse button. The start Menu displayed after Click and drag helps a user copy and move objects such as pictures, files and folders from one place to another within a computer. For instance, a file/folder can be dragged from Hard Disk to the External Data storage Devices, such as USB Flash, Compact Disc or Floppy Disks. Right Click brings up the menu of options containing commands depending on the position of the pointer. For instance, when you right click on a file in the Desktop or Windows Explorer, you will see a pop up menu displaying the commands related to that Item such as Open, New, Edit, Copy, Cut, Delete, Properties, etc. Left Click or single click is used for displaying Drop down Menus as well as selecting Commands in most software. Double click performs different actions depending on the program a user is working on. For example, you can open a file or folder by just double clicking on its icon. If it's the three-buttons mouse, clicking the middle button will perform pre-defined actions. For instance when you are browsing the Internet, you can click a link on the Web browsers so that they will open in the new browser tab instead of opening them in the same tab. You can also use the middle/wheel or scroll button to scroll upwards/downwards across the long documents. See also this:
